Labor and Employment Issues For Small Businesses

Speaker:  Jim Yates, Esq., SHRM-SCP, SPHR

                  Eastman and Smith

Over the past several years, federal agencies have issued a multitude of workplace regulations and directives impacting small businesses.  Additionally, the Ohio legislature has recently weighed in on other workplace issues.  These regulatory pronouncements and new laws have a far-reaching impact on which employees are in protected classes and what that means, how to pay (and how much to pay) employees, what employers can require of employees regarding workplace safety and under what circumstances employees can store a gun on Company property – and who can smoke marijuana.  A Trump Administration adds an additional element of uncertainty to an already confusing area fraught with significant risk for small businesses.  Attorney Jim Yates will discuss the impact of these recent regulatory and statutory changes on small businesses.

Jim Yates is a Member of Eastman & Smith Ltd.'s Labor and Employment Practice Group.  He represents public and private sector employers in all facets of labor and employment law and consults with clients on drafting and implementing various employment policies.  He is a frequent speaker at seminars regarding labor and employment law topics and is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM – SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional).
