Speaker:  Nick Raich, CFA, The Earnings Scout 

  

Nick Raich will explore the key drivers behind the top-performing mega-cap tech stocks, known as the “Magnificent Seven,” and offer insights into how interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve could affect their valuations and performance, as well as the broader market. He will also highlight critical investment opportunities and potential risks to consider as we head into the upcoming Presidential election.

 Nick Raich is the CEO and Co-Founder of The Earnings Scout, an independent macroeconomic research firm that specializes in earnings trends. He is widely recognized as a leading expert on corporate profits and makes frequent appearances on CNBC, Bloomberg TV, as well as in national and regional print media, including The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and The New York Times. Prior to founding The Earnings Scout, Raich had 15 years of an experience as a Director of Rand esearch successfully leading teams of investment professionals that consistently outperformed at Key Private Bank, National City and Zacks Investment Research in Chicago.  

Raich has a BS in Finance and an MBA from Youngstown State University. He is a member of the Forbes Investment Panel, a member of the Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance Advisory Council at Youngstown State and is a Chartered Financial Analyst®.

 Speaker:  Paul Hoffmeister, Chief Economist and Portfolio Manager, Camelot Event Driven Fund, Camelot Portfolios LLC.

  

Mr. Hoffmeister joined Camelot Portfolios in 2017, where he is chief economist and portfolio manager. He is also managing member of Camelot Event-Driven Advisors and co-portfolio manager of Camelot Event-Driven Fund. He received his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and BS in Accounting and Finance from Georgetown University.

FRAUD PREVENTION AND AWARENESS

Speakers:  Matt Swansinger and Devon Lossick,

Special Agents, Federal Bureau of Investigation

 

Agents Swansinger and Lossick will discuss topics such as romance scams that involve elder fraud, investment fraud scams, and business email compromise (BEC).  Important topic for our families, clients and employees.

Matt Swansinger has been a FBI Special Agent since 2008 and is currently assigned to the Toledo Resident Agency of the Cleveland Division of the FBI.  SA Swansinger investigates white collar cases to include investment fraud, elder fraud, embezzlement, public corruption, fraud against the government, corporate fraud, and cryptocurrency fraud matters.   Prior to joining the FBI, SA Swansinger spent seven years in the private sector and worked for a supply chain management company to develop supply chain solutions for companies.   SA Swansinger holds a Bachelor’s degree in business finance and logistics and an MBA. 

Devon Lossick has been an FBI Special Agent since 2010 and is assigned to the Toledo Resident Agency of the Cleveland Division of the FBI.  SA Lossick previously investigated Violent Crimes Against Children matters but currently investigates white collar crimes.  Prior to joining the FBI, SA Lossick worked as an attorney and is licensed in Indiana and Ohio.

Central banks, inflation, recession, inversion, QT, the Magnificent 7, AI, DC, elections, deficits, war, labor, consumers, oil, housing, China, and bitcoin to name just a few interesting items impacting the economy and markets in 2023.  Join us to discuss what could be most meaningful and how it may translate into the economy and markets in 2024.  We’ll keep it lively and moving, and provide plenty of time for Q&A.

Scott is an experienced investment professional with over 25 years of market experience in both public and private markets.  In that time, he was a portfolio manager for an insurance company, a mutual fund manager for a regional bank, a partner for a Private Wealth firm, and lastly, a trustee for two public pension systems.  Prior to his career in finance, Scott was a management consultant and a mechanical engineer.  Scott has helped numerous organizations and individuals understand the economy, decipher markets, and make sound investment choices to reach their objectives.
 
Scott is a graduate of the University of Rochester and the Harvard Graduate School of Business.  During the global financial crisis, he was a frequent guest/contributor to CNBC, Fox Business, Bloomberg, Barron’s and Reuters.  He holds the CFA charter, the CMT charter, and the Chartered Hedge Fund Certificate in Due Diligence. He currently serves on the boards of an educational foundation, alumni club endowment, and a public pension system.

Creating, Launching, and Running a Mutual Fund

Speaker:  Darren Munn, CFA, CEO/CIO, Camelot Portfolios LLC and Munn Wealth Management

Do you have an investment strategy you believe is good enough to offer to the masses?  If so, what are the options to make it happen?  What are the economics of launching and running a mutual fund?  What are the greatest challenges?

Camelot Portfolios is a Registered Investment Advisor in Maumee, OH that has launched two mutual funds from scratch and acquired an existing fund.  Darren Munn, Camelot’s CEO and CIO will share their story including successes and failures. 

Darren is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Camelot Portfolios, LLC and its’ sister company: Munn Wealth Management.  Darren founded what would become Munn Wealth Management when he started his practice in 1998 and created Camelot Portfolios in 2008 as fellow advisors sought out his investment management expertise.  

Darren graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Toledo College of Business Administration in 1999 with a Major in Finance and a Minor in Business Law.  He went on to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2002.  He is married to Erin and they have a total of 11 children plus 1 grandchild.  Darren & Erin love to travel together and hope to visit one new country plus one new state each year.

Alex J. Gerken serves as Toledo City President and Senior Commercial Banker for Fifth Third Bank, Northern Ohio. He is responsible for the overall leadership of activities for all business lines in Toledo, and particularly focused on driving the Bank’s growth in Commercial, Wealth & Asset Management, Capital Markets and Treasury Management Solutions. Alex previously served as Middle Market Manager for the Commercial Division and Business Banking Executive for six years. He joined Fifth Third Bank in 2001 in the Commercial Banking division. He was promoted to Vice President, Business Banking Team Leader in 2006 and was named Business Banking Executive in 2007. He was then promoted to Senior Vice President of Business Banking in early 2010. Before joining Fifth Third, Alex served as an intern in the Commercial Credit Department at KeyBank. Alex received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Toledo, with honors, and a master’s degree in business administration from The Ohio State University.

 

Martin P. Sutter is Chairman, CEO and President of GenoaBank and its parent company, GenBanc.  Sutter, a Martin resident, earned his Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Finance at the University of Toledo. He received a graduate degree in Commercial Banking from Oklahoma University. In addition, he received his Masters Degree in Business from Bowling Green State University. Sutter has been employed as a community banker at GenoaBank since August of 1988. He spent a portion of his career in commercial banking where he helped businesses throughout Northwest Ohio with their financing needs. He has over 35yearsof banking experience and continues to play his part in the success of GenoaBank.

 

Jim Hoffman has served as Regional President for KeyBank National Association since 1994.  Responsible for leading and managing all banking activities in Michigan and Western Ohio including Commercial Banking, Business Banking, Retail Banking and Wealth Management. Vice Chair KeyBank Foundation and KeyPac Board Member. Jim received his BBA and MBA from the University of Toledo.

 2023 Economic Outlook

Economic Analytics, LLC.  was founded in 2022 to provide economic, interest rate and bank strategic consulting services to its bank clients.  Its sole principal is Robert J. Morgan.

Mr. Morgan has fifty-five years of experience working in the commercial banking industry.  He has held positions managing investment portfolios, trust departments, bank investment portfolios, interest rate risk measurement and management assignments, investor relations and balance sheet structuring strategies.  He has worked in small community bank and large regional bank environments.  He founded the Financial Management division of Austin Associates, which later became Probank Austin, in 1991.  For the past thirty years he has worked with hundreds of banks designing Asset/Liability management capabilities and consulting on pricing and balance sheet structuring. He provides economic and interest rate forecasts for the purpose of creating the context within which a bank can reach its financial objectives.  He designs measurement systems to control interest rate and liquidity risk while meeting regulatory requirements.

Mr. Morgan holds a B.S. degree from Eastern Michigan University.  He attended Wayne State University working toward a M.B.A.  He earned a CFA designation in 1976 and is a graduate of the ICFA institute at Princeton University.  He has served positions as Chief Economist at a multi-state, regional bank as well as interim CEO and CFO positions at client banks assisting the transition of management.

“Economic Development in Toledo”

Speaker:  Brandon Sehlhorst, Director,

                 Economic Development, City of Toledo

 

Brandon Sehlhorst serves as Director of Economic Development for the City of Toledo.  In this role, Brandon is primarily responsible for facilitating major development projects, managing the City’s real estate portfolio, and increasing job creation and investment through attraction, expansion, and retention of private sector companies.

Under his leadership, the City has sold over 400-acres of underutilized property that has led to the creation of more than 1,000 jobs and $130 million of investment.  The City has also been nationally recognized by Site Selection magazine who has ranked Toledo in the top 10 for mid-size metros excelling in economic development for the past six years.  The City clinched the #1 spot in the ranking for the first time in 2021.

Prior to joining the City, Brandon worked for the Regional Growth Partnership where he proactively worked with communities to prepare sites for job creation projects.  Before the RGP, Brandon worked at the City of Cincinnati’s Department of Economic Development and REDI Cincinnati where he led incentive negotiations for job creation projects in southwest Ohio.

Brandon graduated cum laude from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Urban Planning and a Master of Business Administration and Real Estate.  He was also named Student of the Year by the University of Cincinnati’s Real Estate Center.  His passion and determination for improving his hometown led him back to the Glass City several years ago. 

Brandon lives in South Toledo with his wife, son and dog. He’s an avid runner who enjoys live music, traveling and Cincinnati Reds, Bengals and Michigan football games.

James Kerr, Manager of Investor Relations, joined Cleveland-Cliffs in 2015. He has held various positions within the Company including positions in Financial Reporting, Treasury and now Investor Relations.

Automotive Industry Update: Trends & Outlook

Center for Automotive Research (CAR)

 Bernard Swiecki serves as Director of Research at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), as well as Director of the Automotive Communities Partnership (ACP). He joined CAR in 1994.

Mr. Swiecki manages research projects studying a wide breadth of automotive industry structure and technology topics. He manages CAR’s analysis of vehicle market and production data. He has also led trade missions to China, Italy, India, and Russia. Mr. Swiecki has authored numerous articles for print publications, as well as a monthly column, on the automotive industry. He regularly presents at conferences and industry events around the world, as well as providing interviews to local, national, and global media.

Mr. Swiecki is a member of the Society of Automotive Analysts (SAA). He has served on the U.S. Department of Commerce Eastern Michigan District Export Council. He received his BA from the University of Michigan in 1998 and his MS from Eastern Michigan University in 2003.

Robert J. Morgan is a Senior Consultant at ProBank Austin. He has been with the firm since 1990. Mr. Morgan served as a Senior Vice President and Chief Economist with a multi-billion dollar regional bank. He also served in executive management capacities with community banking organizations and has managed investment, trust, budgeting, and financial forecasting functions. Mr. Morgan directs the firm’s Financial Management Division and works with clients on all aspects of asset/liability and interest rate risk management, investment portfolio management, and other aspects of bank financial performance. He has more than 45 years of experience in the investment management field and within the banking industry.

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University, Detroit, and a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti. He is a past president of the Southern Council of Asset Management.  He holds a Chartered Financial Analysts certificate and a graduate of the ICFA Institute at Princeton University.

Mr. Barber will provide a brief overview of Dana with a focus on the future of vehicle electrification. Craig began his career with Dana in 1992 as an analyst in the industrial products group, then serving in several operational positions before being promoted to marketing manager for the Engine and Fluid Products Group. Craig subsequently held management roles in Corporate Planning focusing on manufacturing footprint optimization and Corporate Development focusing on mergers and acquisitions.  Later, he served as manager of strategic planning and financial planning and analysis, and in 2012, Craig assumed the lead for Investor relations. Amber Wohlfarth is the Investor Relations Leader at Owens Corning, a world leader in insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites. Wohlfarth joined Owens Corning in 2008 as a finance intern and moved into the Finance and Accounting Leadership program. During her time in the FALP, she had diverse experiences within corporate finance, and in manufacturing finance in an Insulation plant. She subsequently held positions of increasing responsibility as a financial analyst in both the Insulation and Roofing businesses. Most recently, Amber was the Components Commercial Finance Leader in Roofing. Wohlfarth holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Toledo.

Thierry Denis is vice president of Investor Relations of Owens Corning, a world leader in insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites. Denis joined Owens Corning in 2010 as global director of supply chain and sourcing in its Composite Solutions Business. Prior to this, he held executive positions with CertainTeed, a Saint-Gobain company. He joined CertainTeed in 2002 as vice president of finance; in this role, he restructured the function. Denis then served in general manager roles, where he turned around CertainTeed’s Windows division and led its divestiture, and ultimately managed the company’s FiberCement Siding division.

Denis’ career also includes nearly two decades of global experience with Dow Corning Corporation, the worldwide silicone leader. He held regional and global leadership positions of successive importance in finance, strategy, and commercial management, alternatively based in Europe and the United States. Denis holds a bachelor’s degree in science and finance and an MBA from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, and has attended executive development programs at London Business School, INSEAD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Michigan. He served as a two-year president of both the Philadelphia and the Toledo chapters of Financial Executives International, a premier association of financial executives.

Corporate Communications Manager Katelin Langenderfer and Investor Relations Director John Kraus will provide a history of the company and overview of its current businesses.

Katelin Langenderfer has overseen internal and external communications for The Andersons since 2017. Prior to joining the company, she served as a marketing and communications specialist for ProMedica and SSOE Group, both in Toledo, Ohio. She is a graduate of Bowling Green State University.

John Kraus has been with The Andersons for more than 30 years. Today’s Health Care Challenges:

So Who’s Going to Pay the Bill?

Speaker:  Dan Wakeman, President and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital,  Maumee OH

Dan Wakeman will present the challenges hospitals (and other care providers) face as the business model of healthcare transitions from financial rewards based on volume to rewards based on quality and value. This transition has been accelerated by the large influx of people enrolling into government-sponsored programs (Medicare and Medicaid) and the increase in consumerism brought about by the significant increase in high-deductible commercial insurance plans. Dan will describe how St. Luke’s is well-positioned for this transition and how St. Luke’s plans to navigate these turbulent healthcare waters.

Dan has served as St. Luke’s Hospital’s CEO since February 2008. Prior he held CEO positions at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe, War Memorial Hospital in Sault Saint Marie; Herrick Memorial Hospital in Tecumseh all in Michigan. He has been in healthcare administration for 30 years.

St. Luke’s joined the ProMedica Health System in 2010. The Federal Trade Commission ordered a divestiture in July 1, 2016 to be completed by January 1, 2018.

He was a member of the Michigan Health and Hospital Corporate Board (MHA). He served on the Reimbursement Negotiations Committee - MHA/Blue Cross of Michigan and the Michigan Emergency Medical Authority Board. He was a Director of the Caymich Insurance Company, and was a board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Ninth District.

Dan has been a member of the Ohio Hospital Association Task Force on the State Budget, Executive Committee - Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio, Coverys Company Advisory Board, Genacross Board, Lutheran Services and Vantage Hospitals of Ohio Board.

Dan has a Bachelor’s of Science in Administration from the University of Michigan Dearborn, Master of Science in Health Services Administration from Central Michigan University and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mr. Swiecki has authored numerous articles for print publications, as well as a monthly column, on the automotive industry.  He regularly presents at conferences and industry events around the world, as well as providing interviews to local, national, and global media.

Mr. Swiecki is a member of the Society of Automotive Analysts (SAA).  He has served on the U.S. Department of Commerce Eastern Michigan District Export Council.  He received his BA from the University of Michigan in 1998 and his MS from Eastern Michigan University in 2003.

Nick Raich is the CEO and Co-Founder of The Earnings Scout, an independent macroeconomic research firm that specializes in earnings trends. He is widely recognized as a leading expert on corporate profits and makes frequent appearances on CNBC, Bloomberg TV, as well as in in national and regional print media, including The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and The New York Times.

 

Prior to founding The Earnings Scout, Raich had 15 years of an experience as a Director of Research successfully leading teams of investment professionals that consistently outperformed at Key Private Bank, National City and Zacks Investment Research in Chicago.

 

Raich has a BS in Finance and an MBA from Youngstown State University. He is a member of the Forbes Investment Panel, a member of the Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance Advisory Council at Youngstown State and is a Chartered Financial Analyst®.

Tax Update 2018

Panel Discussion featuring:

 Steve Lauer, Marshall and Melhorn

Thomas Tomlins, CPA, Knueven, Schroeder & Co.

 Our panel will be discussing the recent tax law changes in Washington and how those changes may affect your clients.

Steve Lauer has a vast amount of experience working in the practice areas of trusts and estates, with a concentration in taxation.  Prior to joining Marshall Melhorn, he spent over 33 years as an Estate Tax Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service in Toledo.  During his career in the public sector, Steve was given the assignment of examining numerous Federal Estate Tax returns filed by estates in a 20-county area in northwestern Ohio.  He also examined Federal Gift Tax returns and Fiduciary Income Tax returns filed by individuals, estates and trusts. 

Thomas Tomlins  has been employed with Knueven, Schroeder & Co., CPA’s since 2015. He has experience in both business and individual tax. He graduated with a B.S. from the University of Findlay in 2014 where he double majored in Financial and Managerial Accounting with a minor in Finance. He also graduated with a MBA from the University of Findlay in 2015. He teaches part time at the University of Findlay and is the current tax professor there.
